Restructuring & Turnaround

Restructuring and Turnaround is an exciting multi-disciplinary field which has come to prominence in Australia particularly since the Global Financial Crisis. At the core of this profession is a desire to restore corporate value to struggling organisations, and avoid the economic, social and personal consequences often attached to corporate failure.

AG’s commitment to the field of restructuring and turnaround is reflected in its academic partnerships with the University of Technology, Sydney and the two leading professional associations in the restructuring and turnaround profession: the Turnaround Management Association, Australia (TMAA) and the Australian Restructuring Insolvency & Turnaround Association (ARITA).

Since 2009, we have been the course developers and facilitators of the ‘Strategic Management for Turnaround’ subject for the TMA in collaboration with accessUTS. This subject was developed in 2009 as a requirement for the internationally recognised ‘Certified Turnaround Analyst’ (CTA) and ‘Certified Turnaround Practitioner’ (CTP) designations.

Commencing in 2016, we have also developed the ‘Advanced Restructuring and Turnaround’ subject for the ARITA. This subject is an elective for the ‘ARITA Advanced Certification’, a specialist accreditation for those aiming to advance their career in the field of restructuring and turnaround.

Consistent with our commitment to academic research with a strong industry flavour, AG has been at the forefront of research into the strategy, leadership and management required to lead the successful turnaround and restructure of underperforming businesses. Our knowledge and understanding has also been developed through insights gained from interviews with over forty industry experts in Asia-Pacific region.

The cornerstone of our research is the identification of seven distinct but critical perspectives in the turnaround situation:

  • Major bank lenders
  • Restructuring and corporate advisors
  • Private equity firms
  • Distressed debt providers
  • Non-executive directors
  • Insolvency practitioner firms
  • Legal advisors
